BRIEF: Winchester fire damages home office

Jul 04, 2009 (Jacksonville Journal-Courier - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Fire damaged a residence on Willow Drive in Winchester early Friday.

The fire was contained to the home office, but the single-story structure at 301 Willow Drive sustained moderate to heavy smoke damage throughout.

The cause appears to be electrical, and the origin was a computer that was used less than an hour before the fire broke out, Winchester Fire Chief Paul Rueter said.

The homeowner, Rick Long, had used the computer briefly before shutting it off and leaving for work, Rueter said.

A neighbor noticed smoke billowing from the roof of the house about 6 a.m., 45 minutes after Long had left for work, the fire chief said.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to the other rooms. There were no injuries.

The fire was out after about 45 minutes, but "we also did an overhaul of the ceiling and attic," making sure there weren't any hot spots, Rueter said.

A damage estimate was unavailable. Rueter said despite the gutted home office, the house is habitable and the structure is sound.

South Jacksonville firefighters assisted.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 8:30 a.m.
